Yoga – Your First Class

Yoga is an incredibly healthy and easy to learn form of exercise. No matter what your age or shape, you can do yoga. Whether you are looking for a way to release stress build up, increase flexion and mobility or even to lose weight – yoga is a very easy form of exercise to learn.

There aren’t many things you need to start doing yoga – even if only from home instead of in a class setting. You’ll need a yoga mat (though most yoga classes have yoga mats on hand if you forget yours or don’t have one yet), a yoga band (aka resistance band to help you do poses you just can’t quite do yet), and a yoga bolster (helps you balance and relax in various poses). Other peices of common yoga equipment you may want to invest in include: a yoga mat bag, yoga wedges, yoga balls and a yoga eye pillow (for the end of the class where you truly relax).

In your first yoga class, expect a few awkward moments when you are learning new poses. But be sure that your yoga instructor will help you do the poses. Don’t be shy, the whole point of learning yoga is to learn to deepen your postures and relax into the poses. You can’t learn everything at once, so just go with the flow and do your best. Tomorrow’s best will always be better as you go along.
