Mesothelioma is a type of cancer caused primarily by exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral that was used in a number of military and industrial applications throughout the 20th century. This kind of cancer develops in the mesothelial cells that make up the lining or the lungs, heart and abdomen. Mesothelioma symptoms do not usually show up for 20 to 50 years after initial exposure and the cancer is typically in advanced stages by the time it is diagnosed.
