From Natural Health and Back Again

How did we get here?

Hippocrates It was Hippocrates, nearly 2400 years ago, who put forth the most influential ideas about human health and the creating and preserving of it. His observations and reasoning have formed the basic underpinnings of modern medicine, yet his approaches to actual medical conditions would be defined today as “alternative.” Hippocrates espoused such “alternative” ideas as:

· The natural healing power of the human body.· The importance of eating wholesome unadulterated foods.· The effect of thoughts and feelings on the health of the body.

Yet, as time wore on, the teachings of Hippocrates were forgotten, with men of medicine reverting to dogmatic and fatalistic approaches to disease, using astrology, numerology and religious superstitions. Disease prevention and even daily hygiene were dismissed.

Enter Paracelsus, in the first half of the 16th Century, who attacked the dogmatic belief of his modern doctors that the human body is controlled exclusively by the stars and the planets. He insisted upon the right to discover latent powers of nature by daring to use his faculties of observation and imagination. He stressed the healing power of nature, and raged against modern methods, such as wound treatment that prevented natural drainage of bodily fluids. [Read more...]

Getting Ready to Meditate: Meditation for Beginners or How to Mediate for Beginners

To help you in your journey in meditation it is important to have a regular place to go to for your meditation. I have found through the years that having a routine is helpful. Our bodies, soul and mind seem to respond to this, knowing that it’s time to relax, be peaceful, to meditate. So find a place in your home that is comfortable, relaxing and say “this is my place to meditate”. It can be anywhere, you bed, a couch, a corner, a chair. Also, put up a sign if you have the possibility of being disrupted. You want people to respect your need to be alone, comfortable and have a quiet place to meditate. What you may find with time is that it doesn’t really matter where you meditate because you can get into the here and now with a pair of headphones and “zone out”. You can sometimes muffle out the background noise and once you get into that meditative place it doesn’t matter what’s going on around you.

The nice thing about creating a routine in meditation is that it becomes easier to do with time. So tell your loved ones what you’re going to do and I think they’ll cooperate. Sometimes you may need to get up a little earlier or stay up a little later to take the time to meditate also, but those few extra minutes each day will prove beneficial. [Read more...]

Losing your hair can be quite devastating and cause emotional stress and self esteem issues. While doctors are eager to push prescription drugs for hair loss, there are natural treatments for hair loss available.

There are several main causes for hair loss, but most experts agree that a poor diet could be a major contributor. More commonly, hair loss causes include advancing age, genetics, hormonal changes, stress, poor scalp cirulation and even excessive dandruff.

It is wise to keep track of what remedies you tried and which worked best for you. Everyone is different, so what works for one person may not be ideal for another. Try the remedy on your arm first, to be sure of any reaction you may or may not have before application to your scalp.

There are also some things you may consider avoiding to help prevent further hair loss. Do not brush your hair excessively, towel dry hair gently, avoid tight hats or caps and do not severely pull your hair back in bands, braids or other hairstyles.

Some hair loss remedy ingredients include lettuce, mustard oil, aloe vera oil, henna, margosa leaves, coconut milk, lime-pepper seeds and even liquorice. You may also consider taking some vitamins and minerals to help treat your hair loss: Vitamin A, C, B6 and B12, and Folic Acid. Saw Palmetto is also reported to help.
